Yusuke Nakamae (Japan)

I am a Japanese visual artist and film director whose work explores themes of memory, identity, and the evolving relationship between humanity and technology. Drawing inspiration from science fiction, digital aesthetics, and poetic realism, I create immersive visual experiences that invite reflection on both the future we are shaping and the fragility of the present moment. My creative practice merges digital art, 3D imagery, and cinematic storytelling. By approaching still images with a cinematic sensibility, I aim to blur the boundaries between static and moving visuals, allowing each artwork to suggest a broader narrative beyond a single frame. Light, composition, and atmosphere are treated not merely as visual elements, but as narrative devices that carry emotional and symbolic meaning. This cross-disciplinary approach enables me to work fluidly across visual art and film while maintaining a consistent conceptual core. Rather than separating mediums by format, I consider them different expressions of the same inquiry—how technology reshapes human perception, memory, and belief.

My works often depict transitional spaces: between past and future, reality and fiction, the sacred and the artificial. In both visual art and film, my work has been recognized through multiple international awards and selections. These acknowledgements have reinforced my commitment to developing a practice that balances conceptual depth with visual accessibility. Alongside my activities as a visual artist, one of my recent short films, ECHOES, has received numerous awards and nominations at international film festivals. The film reinterprets mythological and philosophical themes through a contemporary, technology-driven lens, reflecting my ongoing interest in how ancient narratives continue to resonate in digital futures.

I am particularly drawn to moments of quiet tension—where nostalgia, loss, and hope coexist. Rather than offering definitive answers, my works are designed as contemplative spaces that encourage viewers to project their own memories, emotions, and interpretations onto the imagery. Ambiguity plays an important role in my practice, allowing each viewer to form a personal relationship with the work. Through visual art and film alike, I seek to evoke emotional resonance while subtly challenging conventional narratives. Whether through a single artwork or an extended cinematic experience, my goal is to create poetic reflections on what it means to be human in an increasingly technological world—one where progress and vulnerability exist side by side.
